Original Text:
"Sierra Leone owes its name to Portuguese seafarers who thought who thought they saw a giant chain of mountains along the West African coast and also imagined that they heard the roaring of lions in the hills. But the roaring sound came from the surf, and the towering mountains later proved to be cumulus clouds forming great cliffs in the sky. This erroneous designation for Sierra Leone—"Mountain Range of the Lions"—nevertheless became the permanent term for this part of the coast and for the now independent country of the same name" (Berlitz, 1982).

Student Sentence:
Sierra Leon's name, which means "Mountain Range of the Lions," comes from a misunderstanding of Portuguese sailors. When first viewing the land, they mistook the clouds for mountains and waves crashing on the shoreline for bellowing lions (Berlitz, 1982).
